Riff, PD#18245 (2018), is a landscape artwork by Bob Gramsma. It stands like a giant, raised chunk of clay soil on a flat, former agricultural plot in Dronten. Commissioned by Ensemble Black Pencil, I composed a piece of music inspired by Riff.

 

When I entered the work Riff, I was struck by the exotic block that seems to have been pulled from the clay and stands in the landscape as if it had always belonged there. You are drawn into the earthly landscape teeming with life that lies below: raw, earthy. The stairs leading upwards then take you to the polished concrete. With its ultra-sleek design, it forms a connection with the sky and, from above, is reminiscent of the vast polder landscape of Flevoland. The whole is more than the sum of its parts; it is a combination that transports you to something un-Dutch – a Riff somewhere in Greece or Turkey?

 

I took these elements as my starting point for the musical elements. I translated the earthly into an irregular, folk-dance-like passage, partly inspired by the irregular forms of Riff. This develops and slowly climbs upwards towards something tranquil and expansive: a whole that may bring to mind something un-Dutch, yet is at the same time rooted in Dutch soil.

Riff, PD#18245 (2018)  is een landschapskunstwerk van Bob Gramsma. Het staat als een reusachtig opgetild brok kleigrond op een vlak, voormalig landbouwkavel in Dronten. In opdracht van Ensemble Black Pencil maakte ik een muzikaal werk geïnspireerd door Riff.

 

Toen ik het werk Riff betrad, werd ik geraakt door het exotische blok dat uit de klei getrokken lijkt en in het landschap staat alsof het er altijd heeft gehoord. Je wordt meegenomen in het aardse landschap vol leven dat zich onderaan bevindt: rauw, aards. De trappen naar boven leiden je vervolgens naar het gepolijste beton. Superstrak gaat het een verbinding met de hemel aan en doet het bovenop denken aan het uitgestrekte polderlandschap van Flevoland. Het geheel is meer dan de som der delen; het is een optelsom die je meeneemt naar iets on-Nederlands, een Riff ergens in Griekenland of Turkije?

 

Deze elementen heb ik als uitgangspunt genomen voor de muzikale elementen. Het aardse vertaalde ik naar een onregelmatige, volksdansachtige passage, mede geïnspireerd door de onregelmatige vormen van Riff. Die ontwikkelt zich en klimt langzaam omhoog naar iets dat verstild en uitgestrekt is: een geheel dat mag doen denken aan iets on-Nederlands, maar tegelijkertijd geworteld is in Nederlandse bodem.
