Based on the poem Kubla Khan: Or, a vision in a dream by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

"Het gedicht raakt aan iets mystieks, dat niet gelijk binnen een religie past. De muziek volgt Coleridge’s gedicht langs een aantal tableaus te componeren, die met elkaar worden verbonden door de pianopartij, een rivier die soms kolkend en dan weer kabbelend door het landschap stroomt. Dat landschap is zowel donker als licht, prachtig en ijzingwekkend."

"The poem touches on something mystical, something that does not immediately fit within any specific religion. The music follows Coleridge’s poem by shaping a series of tableaux, connected through the piano part — a river that flows through the landscape, at times roaring and at other times gently murmuring. That landscape is both dark and light, beautiful and chilling."
